Gunther Scholz was born 1944 in Goerlitz, Germany. Scholz completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter, before changing to drama and directing in 1967.
He became an assistant director at the DEFA studios and worked as a director there as of 1978. Since 1991 he has worked as a freelance author and director for television series and documentaries on the ARD, ZDF, SAT 1, and RTL networks. His documentary Einschub in den Bericht des Politbueros (1998) was awarded the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Short Film Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1998.
