Josef Mach was born in Prostejov, now Czech Republic on February 25, 1909 and died on July 7, 1987. He was a journalist and stage actor from 1931 to 1938 before becoming an assistant director of short films at Grafofilm Studio in 1938. He directed many feature-length films for the Barrandov Studios in Czechoslovakia and was invited by the DEFA film studios to shoot the first East German Indianerfilm western, which turned out to be enormously successful.
