Siegfried Hartmann was born in 1927. He was an intern at the DEFA Studios for Young Filmmakers from 1949 to 1951 and then assistant director to Kurt Maetzig and Slatan Dudow from 1952 to 1955. At the same time, he directed about twenty films on popular science. He worked as Karl Paryla's assistant director for the film I'm Thirsty (Mich duerstet) in 1956 and joined the East German film studio team in 1957. He also directed many children's films and TV productions.
