Gerd Kroske was born in Dessau (East Germany) in 1958. He studied Kulturwissenschaft at Humboldt University in Berlin and directing at the Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Kroske joined the DEFA Studio for Documentary Films as a dramaturg and writer in 1987, and as a director in 1989. Since 1991, he has worked as a freelance writer and director. In 1996, he founded his own production company, realistfilm. His films, such as Voksal – Bahnhof Brest (1993/1994) and Der Boxprinz (2000) have won prestigious international documentary awards.
